Tiptree and Villages


There are numerous villages located on the North side of the Blackwater Estuary.  Many of the villages have rich maritime heritage and are popular for their views and pleasant walks.  For the commuter, Witham is within easy distance with A12 access and mainline train station offering direct trains into London Liverpool Street.

Home to the world-renowned Wilkins & Sons preserves, the large village of Tiptree is situated south-west of the ancient town of Colchester. Providing an extensive range of shops and amenities including three supermarkets, the self-contained village meets many needs without the necessity to travel. For families Tiptree offers many recreational facilities as well as a choice of four primary schools: St Luke's Church of England Primary school, Milldene Primary School, Tiptree Heath Primary School and Baynard's Primary School. Thurstable School provides secondary and sixth form education. For the commuter, Kelvedon mainline station is within 3.5 miles and access to the A12 within 5 miles. Tiptree Heath lies to the south of Tiptree. The 25-hectare heath is the largest surviving fragment of heathland in Essex, popular with dog walkers and families alike. Surrounding villages include Messing, Tolleshunt Knights, Tolleshunt Major, Layer Marney, Inworth, Birch, Great Braxted, Great Totham and Little Totham.

Tollesbury Tollesbury is a historic maritime village located in the Northern part of the Maldon District.  Known as the village of 'Plough and Sail', it is an excellent place to explore for both walkers and wildlife enthusiasts.  The village offers local primary school, butchers, bakers, two convenience stores and sailing club.  The village has been used as a filming location due to its beautiful saltmarsh landscape.  Productions filmed in Tollesbury include ITV's 2017 thriller 'Liar'

Tolleshunt D'Arcy Tolleshunt D'Arcy is a small village located between Goldhanger and Tollesbury.  The village retains its village shop, church, village hall and public house, The Queen's Head.  The village also has an Indian Restaurant and popular Pre School and Primary School. There is a good mix of character and newer property within the village, and there are scenic rural walks nearby.

Goldhanger Goldhanger is a village directly between Heybridge and Tolleshunt D'Arcy, and has direct passage to the River Blackwater.  The village has a picturesque village centre with working village pump, two pubs and a church.  Goldhanger is first mentioned in the Domesday book and Neolithic flints have been found in Goldhanger Creek, dating some form of civilisation back to about 5,000 years ago.

Great Totham Great Totham is a large village situated midway between Chelmsford and Colchester.  The village is separated into two parts, North and South.  It is a popular place for families due to its very popular primary school. There are three pubs (two in Great Totham South and one in Great Totham North) and convenience store, as well as regular bus links to Maldon and Colchester.  

Little Totham Little Totham is a small village about 6 miles from Maldon and 5 miles from Tiptree.  Most of the population live on the edge of the parish adjoining Tolleshunt Major and centred on the main road running through the village past The Swan public house.  The rest of the parish is agricultural and there are strong farming ties.  

Tolleshunt Major  Tolleshunt Major is a small village situated approximately five miles North East of Maldon.  The village only has six streets, all situated within the built-up part of the village, which consists of just over one hundred dwellings. The village has a very popular pub (The Beckingham Bell) which is situated in Beckingham Street.  The village does have one small shop on Wicks Manor Farm, a local Essex farm which produces dry cured bacon, sausages, ham, gammons and pork.
